Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities (LATA) NVQ

We have already successfully completed training programmes for several hospital laboratory organisations at Level 3 (which has enhanced both their organisation and our reputation in this prestigious field of medicine and enabled them to move forward and create a centre of excellence within the healthcare scientist framework in the NHS), which has enabled staff to achieve Band 3 Senior Assistant Healthcare Scientist. We are currently engaged with laboratory staff both in the public and private sectors at a number of locations to provide further courses at Levels 2, 3 and 4. Update are also involved in providing consultation documentation for several NHS trusts on the Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities NVQ Programme.

This award is dedicated to the Healthcare Scientist framework in the life science disciplines. If you are looking to develop your staff and have their skills and knowledge recognised by a national qualification then we have the right training package to ensure success. All our training delivery and support staff are professionally qualified, have teaching, training and relevant assessor qualifications.

Laboratory staffs provide a vital role within the public and private health sectors. Without these intrinsic members of the team all other healthcare professionals would be hindered in the delivery of their tasks. This NVQ is designed for the following life science disciplines:

  • Pathology
  • Microbiology
  • Haematology
  • Biochemistry
  • Blood Transfusion
  • Immunology
  • Virology
  • Histology
  • Cytology

This qualification is appropriate for full or part-time workers employed within the NHS, or independent health care sector. It offers the opportunity to obtain a nationally recognised vocational qualification for the work that is actually performed and provides the employer with a measured degree of proficiency for employees.

This NVQ instils confidence as it quantifies the ability of the learner to perform their job. Being rewarded for a job well done delivers more job satisfaction and raises the professional self-esteem. An NVQ gives dignity and status to everyone and as such can only enhance the quality of life of those who gain them.

These qualifications are work based so they are solely delivered within the workplace.

Healthcare Scientists in the life science disciplines are defined as being able to carry out a wide range of functions in pathology laboratories, including preparation of test media, making up and sterilising chemical solutions and separating blood serum and plasma.

The Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities NVQ can be taken at Levels 1 to 4

  • Level 1 is usually for Entry-level Assistant Healthcare Scientists who perform limited clinical, technical or scientific tasks in a narrow area.
  • Level 2 is for Assistant Healthcare Scientist Key Support Workers who perform clinical, technical or scientific tasks in a narrow area and makes judgements involving straightforward job-related facts or situations.
  • Level 3 is for Senior Assistant Healthcare Scientists who perform a wider range of protocol driven clinical, technical or scientific tasks and makes judgements which may require analysis.
  • Level 4 is for Associate Healthcare Scientists, or those who are aspiring to this role, who perform clinical, technical or scientific procedures and make judgements requiring analysis and comparison of options.

As you would expect the level structure is not exhaustive and appropriate level selection is not left to chance. A full and individual skills scan assists us to ensure that prospective new learners are working towards the applicable level within their current job role.
